Application Instructions
Please read these instructions carefully before completing this online application. Additional information and instructions can be found on the online application itself and on the transcript and recommendation forms.
Freshmen
Fill out this online application as thoroughly as possible. After you are finished, click the 'SUBMIT' button located in the left column of the application and follow the directions. Print and sign the application agreement statement that appears after you submit the completed online application. Return the signed copy of the application agreement statement to the address below with a $30 nonrefundable application fee (payable to Hampden-Sydney College) or a fee waiver document. Your application will be considered complete when we receive all of the following items: the application agreement statement, your high school transcript, the Application Essay, and the required recommendation(s).
Transfers
If you are transferring from another college or university, in addition to this online application you will need the sheet of Special Instructions for Transfers and the forms it tells you to furnish. You may request the forms from our office, (800) 755-0733. If you want to enter the fall semester, we must receive your completed application by July 1; the spring semester deadline is December 1.
High School Report
Give the High School Report Form to your guidance counselor, who should then send it, together with an official transcript of your grades, to the Admissions Office as soon as possible.
Teacher's Confidential Reference & Personal Reference
Give the Teacher's Confidential Reference Form to a teacher who has taught you an academic subject.
The Personal Reference Form is optional for freshmen candidates, but required of transfer students. It should be completed by a family friend, a Hampden-Sydney alumnus, an employer, or a similar person qualified to make a personal assessment of your background and potential.
Standardized Tests
You are required to take the SAT I Reasoning Test or the ACT. While SAT II subject tests are not required, they are recommended. It is suggested that you take three subject tests, including writing, mathematics, and a third test in an area of interest to you.
All scores must be reported directly to Hampden-Sydney (code number 5291 for the SAT I, code number 4356 for the ACT) or be copied on your official high school transcript.
Financial Aid
Students wishing to apply for financial aid must complete the CSS Profile (code number 5291) and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (code number 003713). For more information, go to: www.hsc.edu/finaid/.
Applicant Photographs
Hampden-Sydney does not require candidates to submit a photograph as part of the admissions process, but we welcome them, since they often prove helpful as a reminder of a previous meeting with a member of our staff.
Choosing An Admissions Plan
Early Decision Plan
The Early Decision Plan is reserved for candidates whose first choice of college is Hampden-Sydney and who, if accepted, agree to enroll at Hampden-Sydney College, provided their financial aid award is sufficient. You must file your Early Decision application by November 15 of your senior year; supporting documents should arrive by December 1. (You may still apply to other colleges, but not under an Early Decision Plan.) Our decision letter will be mailed to you on December 15 two and a half months before the regular decision announcement period begins. You must confirm your place in the class by submitting a reservation deposit by January 15 and withdraw all applications to other colleges and make no further ones.
Under this plan, no student is denied admission; you will either be admitted or deferred. If you are deferred, you will receive thorough, unbiased consideration under the Regular Decision Plan.
If you wish to be considered for financial aid, you should submit a financial form PROFILE from the College Scholarship Service, supplied by the College, by November 15.
Early Action Plan
The Early Action Plan is reserved for candidates whose application and supporting documents are received by January 15. Our decision letter will be mailed from the College beginning February 1. You are expected to confirm your place in the incoming class by May 1.
Regular Decision Plan
Under the Regular Decision Plan, you should submit your application to the College as early as possible, but no later than Hampden-Sydney's application deadline of March 1. Supporting documents should be sent by March 15. Our decision letter will be mailed from the College between February 15 and April 15. If you are accepted, you are expected to confirm your place in the incoming class by May 1.
Early Admission Plan
Hampden-Sydney recognizes that some students with records of superior academic achievement and promise may require fewer than the usual four years of secondary school to prepare for college. Under the Early Admission Plan, qualified candidates whose application and documents are received by July 1 of their junior year will receive an acceptance or deferment no later than July 31. Candidates then visit Hampden-Sydney for an interview.
Honor Code
At Hampden-Sydney College, the concept of honor has been a significant tradition for more than two and a quarter centuries. The heart of the Honor System is individual responsibility. Every student pledges to conduct himself in an honorable and upright manner in all phases of his life, for his own sake, for the sake of fellow students, and for the sake of the College. A student's obligation under the Honor System does not stop at the limits of the campus, but applies in all places at all times. Although the concept of honor may mean different things to different people, within the Hampden-Sydney College community its definition is clear: The Hampden-Sydney man will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do. These obligations are basic our honor system, one of the nation's oldest and most respected.
