CCCC: U.S. History Offerings

The options for completion below include the minimum number of credit hours a student can expect to receive coupled with the most stringent requirement for universal acceptance. Some institutions may award more credit hours or accept lower AP or IB scores. Students should consult their institution of choice for specific requirements.

Students will receive six (6) degree credits for U.S. History from the participating institutions by completing one of the following options below:
  1. U.S. History Advanced Placement Exam with a score of 51
  2. Dual Enrollment U.S. History I and II (VCCS course numbers 121 and 122) with a grade of C or higher*
*Special Notes:
  • At Christopher Newport University, in order for U.S. History to be usable for completion of the general education history requirement, the student must present both U.S. History courses upon entering the University
  • George Mason University requires a grade of B or higher in Dual Enrollment U.S. History Courses to receive credit
  • University of Richmond, Hampden-Sydney College and Washington and Lee University review dual enrollment courses on a case-by-case basis.
1Hollins University grants 4 credit hours for a score of 5 on the AP U.S. History exam. Mary Baldwin College grants 3 credit hours. Roanoke College grants 1 unit (equal to 4 semester hours).
